On March 27, 2018, the Kings County Board of Supervisors honored Marlene (Mickey) Thayer (right) and Mary Gonzales-Gomez (left) for their leadership roles with the Kings County Board of Education. This prestigious recognition was also shared by other women throughout the county serving in leadership roles in various governmental agencies.

By way of Resolution, the Board declared March as Women in History Month.

Mickey, her preferred nickname, was first elected in November 2004 and is currently serving a third term representing Area 1, the west area of Kings County. Mary was appointed in May 2015, and is currently serving her first full-term term representing Area 2, which encompasses Corcoran, Avenal, and Kettlemen City constitutes.

Congratulations to both of these professional women for their service to Kings County students.

Brown Act Amendment Requires Reporting of Individual Votes
Newly enacted legislation, which takes effect January 1, 2014, requires votes of individual board members to be publicly reported. The purpose of the legislation is to provide greater public transparency by legislative bodies such as school governing boards.

   The County Board of Education has responsibility for:

           Adopting policies governing the operation of the Board;
Acting as the appeals board for student expulsions;
           Acting as the appeals board for inter-district transfers;
           Acting as the appeals board for Charter School petitions;
           Establishing the County Superintendent’s salary;
           Potentially serving as the landlord and owner of property.


      Through its role of long-range policy development and other critical functions, the Board works with the
     Kings County Superintendent of Schools and staff
 to offer the most effective education programs and
     district support services.
 The Board also encourages the involvement of families and communities and is
 vehicle for  citizen access to communication about Kings County Office of Education's programs and
